Oct 27th Reading

From all around Ontario and Quebec, out west and from the East Coast, we have a lineup of a reunion.

Bernadette, our out of provincer, is a multi-genre writer from Regina SK. Her collection of poetry, This hot place (Thistledown 2010), was shortlisted for the Saskatchewan First Book Award. An excerpt from her unpublished fiction manuscript won first place for Children’s Literature at the 2011 SWG Short Manuscript Awards. She’s happy to be visiting Ottawa again.

Frances’s poetry and fiction have appeared across Canada and in the U.S. in anthologies and literary magazines including The Fiddlehead, Room and CV 2, and as a “Monday’s poem”. Awards include Arc’s Diana Brebner Prize, and second place in Prairie Fire’s Banff Centre Bliss Carmen Award. Happily making her home in Ottawa for 16 years, Frances still draws on her strong ties to Regina and Vancouver.

Jacqueline, of Acadian origin, grew up along the ocean shores of New Brunswick. She spent the better part of her career in Ottawa where she worked as a communicator for a public sector organization. She is currently working on a suite of ekphrastic poems on Frederick Varley’s paintings.

Peter is a Lanark County-based writer. He is currently working on his first work of fiction: a novel that alternates between a northern Ontario Cree community and southern Arizona, and which explores the personal effects of memory, family history and environment – and their loss – through the adventures of a (for want of a better term) post-modern “odd couple.”

Gwen is a teacher, a writer and a picture book reviewer ( She is the author of the Mary’s Atlas picture book series, a McNally Robinson best seller, but you can also find this former prairie gal’s writing in big people sources such as The Globe and Mail. She’s taken part in the Ottawa International Writers Festival school program, and recently placed second in the CAA-NCR short fiction contest for her story, “Sand.”

Vanessa is a Toronto-based writer and performing musician. She is currently working on an interconnected novel and album, two short stories, and trying to learn how to write poetry. She will read a poem and sing a song.

Pearl is a writer, blogger, poet, with optional camera attachment. She has 2 longer poetry collections and 5 chapbooks out over the last 4 years. She is sending out her backlog with 2 chapbooks and 1 book out there circulating. She organizes the Tree Seed Workshop Series. She’ll be hosting the night.

Robin is the brainstorm behind this idea of a reunion reading of writing retreat folks. She would probably not admit how startling crisp, delicate, precise and powerful her poetry is but luckily this is ghost written.
